A balanced bacterial colonisation of the oral cavity protects against inflammations such as gingivitis and periodontitis, bleeding gums, aphthae and also against bacterial bad breath.

If the so-called oral microbiota (oral flora) is not in balance, such problems can occur. This happens due to a high-sugar diet, smoking, insufficient oral hygiene or even medication.
